Genre Conventions

Conventions of Thriller films.

THEMES

Music

The music used in a psychological thriller will usually be the type that causes tension or suspense. It tends to have a low tone and classical music is often used. It usually starts off at a slow tempo when the action is less, and as the action builds towards the climax of a scene it intensifies and speeds up and ordinarily stops after a major event.

Symbols, Signs, Iconography

There are endless amounts of symbols, signs and iconography shown in psychological thrillers. The most common ones are items or objects such as knives, guns and typically other kinds of weapons. These are used to show that a character may be in danger and under threat. Other things could be things such as shadows. Shadows are a good one as they show uncertainty, they allow the audience to know that something is happening without necessarily having to reveal the identity of what is creating the shadow, which causes both fear and worry. Another common symbol of a psychological thriller is reality, or more often than not, the exact opposite. Characters often are not able to tell the difference between what is real and what isn't, they often confuse both and this can end badly.

Narrative

A psychological thriller is a film that usually pursues a single goal. However, the goal is never achieved easily. The aim of a thriller is to, as the name suggests, provide thrills for the audience through means of shocking them and keeping them at the edge of their seats as the plots builds to often clever and always unexpected ending.
