Research Into Certificate: U

Certificate Information: U (Universal)

The U certification is suitable for all audiences aged Four years and over. although, it is impossible what might upset individual children, especially in this lower age category range. I a U rated film there will only b very mild language like the words 'damn' or 'hell'.
The only sexual activity in films of this age rating is either kissing or cuddling, or any other references to sexual behaviour (eg. Innuendo). very rarely refers to homosexual relationships.
A U film may include brief fight scenes or moments where characters are placed in danger. However, moments of emotional stress or threat will be quickly resolved and the outcome will be reassuring.
There may be brief scary scenes and moments where the characters are placed in danger. As with violence, however, these scenes will be balanced by reassuring elements, such as comic interludes or music.
At U there will not normally be references to illegal drugs or drugs misuse unless there is a very clear anti-drugs or educational message which will be understood by a younger audience.

THEMES

Music

The music used in a psychological thriller will usually be the type that causes tension or suspense. It tends to have a low tone and classical music is often used. It usually starts off at a slow tempo when the action is less, and as the action builds towards the climax of a scene it intensifies and speeds up and ordinarily stops after a major event.

Symbols, Signs, Iconography

There are endless amounts of symbols, signs and iconography shown in psychological thrillers. The most common ones are items or objects such as knives, guns and typically other kinds of weapons. These are used to show that a character may be in danger and under threat. Other things could be things such as shadows. Shadows are a good one as they show uncertainty, they allow the audience to know that something is happening without necessarily having to reveal the identity of what is creating the shadow, which causes both fear and worry. Another common symbol of a psychological thriller is reality, or more often than not, the exact opposite. Characters often are not able to tell the difference between what is real and what isn't, they often confuse both and this can end badly.

Narrative

A psychological thriller is a film that usually pursues a single goal. However, the goal is never achieved easily. The aim of a thriller is to, as the name suggests, provide thrills for the audience through means of shocking them and keeping them at the edge of their seats as the plots builds to often clever and always unexpected ending.

Final Film Idea.

Boy wakes up, looks confused, shrugs it off and walks downstairs, again begins to look confused but carries on and ignores it, gets ready and walks out of the door cuts to him coming home, walks up the stairs and goes in his bedroom, cantered angle camera as he puts his things down and places his coat over the back of a chair, then gets in bed, when he wakes up his chair is gone and the coat is on the floor, he picks it up and puts it on without thinking about, he then has a moment of realisation and as he's leaving he turns round to stare at where he picked it up from, knowing that something is strange, he carries on as usual,
He no longer dare go to sleep, he knows that when he goes to sleep something is going to change, he sits at a table, his eyes are dark and bloodshot and his hair is a mess, you can see both the fear and tiredness in his eyes, lots of empty energy drink cans, and tablets scattered around the table, eventually he can't stay awake no more he falls asleep and this is when the worst happens. He is staring at a photo frame. A photo frame that took over his life. He wakes in a completely unfamiliar room and panics, he knows something is going to have happened and daren't do anything because he knows how it's going to be, he hesitantly leaves the room, and when he goes downstairs his family don't recognise him and are scared that there's a stranger in the house, he argues that he's their son but the Dad grabs him and drags him out of the house,
Everything that changes goes into this photo, like when the chair goes missing there is a chair in an empty photo. Say if a pen went missing, there would be a chair and a pen. He wakes up from his sleep one day and then wakes in an unfamiliar room. There is a close upshot of his eyes opening rapidly. The camera slowly pulls away from his face whilst you hear doctors voices saying 'he appears to be in a catatonic state'. It could then cut to him in a mental state in the white room thumping on the doors screaming and kicking to get him out. This could represent his mental state. Everything he needs and wants to be a normal stable person seem to be going missing. This could also be a link to his brain. The things that the brain needs to function are slowly going and disintegrating.
He walks around the room and takes a seat somewhere and his eyes begin to water, it fades and cuts to flashbacks of happier times when he's with friends and family, always laughing, then the laugh continues in a graphic match, this time more sinister, as he's stood against a white wall, in a straight jacket with a light in his face (the light swings to emphasise his madness) and then it slowly fades out with him laughing all the time...
